Getting Your Child Ready for School

At Home-Start Kirklees when we talk about school readiness we mean teaching your child the independence and self-help skills they need to manage a full day in a busy classroom without you.

Before they start school children should aim to be able to;

Play & share with others,
Follow simple instructions,
Dress independently, putting on their own coat and shoes
Use the toilet independently and understand basic hygiene,
Eat and drink unaided
Cope with being away from their parents/carers
Communicate their wants and needs

Help you with your goals

Our staff and trained volunteers can support your family to these goals using a range of fun activities and resources to encourage learning in the home and access to community-based provision to support play development and social skills. Access to this service is by referral only and parents can self-refer.

You will be gifted your own bag of school readiness resources to use and a volunteer or staff member will demonstrate how to use the resources and what benefits there are to developing your child’s skills, confidence and more importantly, what role you play in school readiness.

Our referral form can be found on our website here or ask your 0-19 Health Practitioner or other professional to make a referral for you. We will offer up to four 1 to 1 sessions in the home and can support with other family challenges if needed.
