We need more volunteers, could this be you or someone you know…?
We have a training course for new volunteers starting on Thursday 20th September 2018. It will run every Thursday until 3rd November with a break for half term.
You will be fully supported in your volunteering role and receive out of pocket expenses. Please call us on 01484 421925 for more information
We are always ready to welcome new volunteers at Home-Start Kirklees, whether visiting families at home or helping with our young parents groups, or acting as trustees of the charity.
Who are our volunteers?
Our volunteers are committed and caring people who come from all walks of life and who offer their time to help parents provide a good start in life for their children. They are usually parents themselves and bring with them personal experience and life skills.
They are friendly and approachable and can be relied on and trusted by parents to listen without being judgemental, and to respect the needs of each individual family.
We are very fortunate in Home-Start Kirklees to have three types of volunteers who all give their time and energy free of charge!
Our trustees meet every 6 weeks to set our strategic direction, ensure our financial underpinning and oversee our work. They take the legal responsibility for the charity and employ the paid staff.
Our home-visiting volunteers visit families in their homes, offering the benefit of their parenting and life experience to parents who are often lonely, lacking in confidence and struggling to cope. They are not child care experts but they are non-judgmental, reliable, able to respect families’ confidentiality and willing to give up around 3 hours each week to help a family.
Our group volunteers, also experienced parents, offer support to our young mothers groups and, like their home-visiting counterparts, turn out every week to help us deliver our service.
All home-visiting volunteers…
- Undertake a 7 week course of preparation, which takes place one day a week. This fully prepares volunteers for their role.
- Receive lots of support both during the preparation course and after, when they are supporting Home-Start families, from a designated co-ordinator.
- Can access additional training and social events throughout the year.
- Receive all out of pocket expenses incurred whilst volunteering for Home-Start.
Trustees and group volunteers also receive a full induction to Home-Start and are fully supported once they begin their volunteer work with us.
Amazingly, most of our volunteers do paid work as well as volunteering, proving the old adage, “If you want something done, ask a busy person”! When they move on, volunteers usually find their time with Home-Start has provided good experience that helps them into further and higher education, and jobs.
We are delighted that we have been awarded the Kirklees Volunteering Quality Award. The award recognizes that we value our volunteers and provide them with a high quality experience with good quality practice standards in place. It is valid for the next 3 years from November 2017 and the panel is made up of members from Volunteering Kirklees, Kirklees Council and Volunteering Kirklees Network.
