Volunteers

We need more volunteers, could this be you or someone you know…?

We have a prep course starting in January 2020  – it will run one day every week for 7 weeks.

You will be fully supported in your volunteering role and receive out of pocket expenses. Please call us on 01484 421925 for more information

Volunteering

We are always ready to welcome new volunteers at Home-Start Kirklees, whether visiting families at home or helping with our young parents groups, or acting as trustees of the charity.

Who are our volunteers?

Our volunteers are committed and caring people who come from all walks of life and who offer their time to help parents provide a good start in life for their children. They are usually parents themselves and bring with them personal experience and life skills.

They are friendly and approachable and can be relied on and trusted by parents to listen without being judgemental, and to respect the needs of each individual family.

All family supporting volunteers…

  • Undertake a 7 week course of preparation, which takes place one day a week. This fully prepares volunteers for their role.
  • Receive lots of support both during the preparation course and after, when they are supporting Home-Start families, from a designated co-ordinator.
  • Can access additional training and social events throughout the year.
  • Receive all out of pocket expenses incurred whilst volunteering for Home-Start.

Amazingly, most of our volunteers do paid work as well as volunteering, proving the old adage, “If you want something done, ask a busy person”! When they move on, volunteers usually find their time with Home-Start has provided good experience that helps them into further and higher education, and jobs.

We currently have the following volunteering opportunities:

Home visiting volunteers – to visit families weekly in their homes, offering the benefit of their parenting and life experience to parents who are often lonely, lacking in confidence and struggling to cope. They are not child care experts but they are non-judgmental, reliable, able to respect families’ confidentiality and willing to give up around 2-3 hours each week to help a family.

Peer educators – parents with young parent experience to support other young parents up to age of 24 years, either 1 to 1 or group support.

Minute taking volunteers – to take minutes at committee and board meetings (meetings are held during the day and normally finish no later than 5.30pm. Volunteering would be as and when available and not expected to cover every meeting).

Trustee – vacancy for a trustee who either resides or works in the North Kirklees area with skills in either business, marketing, social media or fundraising. Our trustees meet every 6 weeks to set our strategic direction, ensure our financial underpinning and oversee our work. They take the legal responsibility for the charity and employ the paid staff.

All travel expenses will be paid and full training and support offered.

If you are interested in volunteering for Home-Start Kirklees, please contact us on 01484 421925 for further information or an informal chat.

Quality

We are delighted that we have been awarded the Kirklees Volunteering Quality Award. The award recognises that we value our volunteers and provide them with a high quality experience with good quality practice standards in place. It is valid for 3 years from November 2017 and the panel is made up of members from Volunteering Kirklees, Kirklees Council and Volunteering Kirklees Network.
