Healthier snacks for young families

Our Young Parents groups were grateful to receive £500 funding from Waitrose. This enabled us to provide cooking activities for 20 parents and 26 children within the group settings. Our supportive Peer Educators also joined in with their own children, helping with the planning and the practical demonstrations within groups.

During the first week we had a discussion about what types of snacks the parents often buy for their children, how much they cost and how convenient they were. Everyone mentioned the increase in the cost of living and how this was impacting on their day to day budgeting. Based on the discussions, we decided to demonstrate easy, healthier versions of these popular snack items, which were more cost effective, more nutritious and also gave the parents an opportunity to spend some quality time interacting with their children.

We chose:

  • Individual Jelly and fruit pots
  • Individual custard and fruit pots
  • Cereal bars with added fruit
  • Healthier flapjack
  • Hidden vegetable sausage rolls
  • Pizza pin wheels
  • Chocolate and banana pinwheels
  • Fruit and yoghurt skewers/frozen fruit lollies
  • Chocolate and raisin treats

We also provided a selection of utensils, including a baking tray, individual tubs, wooden spoon, greaseproof paper and storage tubs as some of the group did not have some of the basic kitchen essentials at home for the task.

“Since the project, I have learnt to make cheaper and quicker ways to make yummy snacks for me and my son that are healthy too. Thank you!”
