Charity Objects

Home-Start Kirklees is a registered charity with the following charitable aims:

To safeguard, protect and preserve the good health, both mental and physical, of children and parents of children;
To prevent cruelty to, or maltreatment of children;
To relieve sickness, poverty and need amongst children and parents / carers of children;
To promote the education of the public in better standards of childcare within the area of Kirklees and its environs.

Our Outcomes

All our work is aimed at three outcomes – underpinned by the strategic aims and objectives in this plan.

As well as individual support (home based or remote) we offer peer group support sessions for young parents aged 14-24 years and other targeted parents by referral. Professionally led groups help individuals learn, overcome feelings of isolation/loneliness and build useful relationships with their peers.

Our service is designed around the needs of each family. Our Co-ordinators regularly monitor progress. Families are encouraged to give feedback on their experience of using Home-Start Kirklees and we use this feedback to identify gaps and continually improve the services we offer.

Home-Start Kirklees focuses on prevention and early intervention. Our volunteers and groups work with families at a critical stage when they need support and practical help. Our work diverts people away from primary care and the need for crisis intervention from local services. We are confident that the emphasis on prevention, building family strength and long-term support creates outcomes that represent a significant ‘return on investment’.

We are an affiliated member of Home-Start UK (HSUK), which provides organisational support across a national; network and operates a quality assurance process to ensure that our governance structure and management processes reflect best practice.

The difference we make:

Our parents’ self-esteem is raised, they are made to feel worthy of being respected and having their opinions valued and their voices heard.
Our children have better focus, concentration and speech and language, to improve readiness for nursery or school.
Our parents have improved health/well-being, are more aware of health literacy and have reduced health inequalities.
Our parents reduce risk taking and keep themselves and their children safe online, in relationships and out and about in communities.
Our children’s confidence and play opportunities improve. They are more able and equipped to achieve their developmental milestones.
Our parents are more able to practice positive parenting and more aware of their child’s needs in creating healthy lifestyles, socialisation, learning and development.
Our children are less anxious and more able to engage, interact with peers and adults, with improved independence and self-help skills.
Our parents are more able to live independently, create a nurturing and stimulating home environment, with better understanding of household budgeting, food planning and making healthier lifestyle choices.
Our parents build their own support networks to become more resilient and less dependent upon services, helping them to become more confident and more likely to engage in community-based provision.
