We run 4 group sessions a week at locations across Kirklees including Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Cleckheaton.
Many young parents feel judged, marginalised and isolated in society because they have had a child at a young age and consequently their confidence and self-esteem are affected, and friendships are often lost.
A lot of fun is had during the sessions, by both parents and children, with activities such as craft sessions, messy play and outings to places like play gyms and local parks. But there is a serious side to the groups too, with activities aimed at increasing young parents’ confidence to believe in their own abilities and helping them make positive life choices.
Our group staff help parents to access appropriate training and contraceptive services and identify the education and work options that will improve their longer-term economic prospects.
Families are referred to our group peer support sessions for a wide variety of reasons including isolation, loneliness, feeling over-whelmed after the birth of additional children or struggling with mental health.
For some, attending group is a gradual process, the thought of walking into a room full of strangers is just too much, and 1:1 support is needed to build trusting relationships with staff initially.
We aim to help parents connect with others, build the confidence to attend group sessions and use the services available in their local community, provide guidance and information to support positive parenting, within a non-judgmental, supportive environment.
